Acrylic on Canvas February 1, 2017 Exhibition text “All Connected” is a Tryptic piece exploring 3 essential questions of; Who am I, How does the environment affect me, How do I affect my environment? It’s created out of 3 different acrylic paintings that all tie together by the same theme; how electronic tronics affects us mentally, affects us presently, and in the future. It was created to remind people that we can’t let our electronic tronics have control over us. “All Connected” was inspired by the techniques of Geoff Slater’s line paintings. |
Plan
Process/ Experimentation
I started with stretching the three canvases. Then I had to put two coats of gesso on it to stiffen/prime them. Once all that was done I had to paint the background of each panel. Once they were dry I sketched on them the things I had sketched in sketch two. Then using small detail brushes and a lot of patients I painted all the lines and details. I did not know what colors would look the best for me to use for the brain and the flower I mixed different shades of picks and oranges and made swatches on a piece of paper until I created the colors that I liked the best.
Reflection
“All Connected” does not have a clear showing of the artist inspiration. Geoff Slater uses lines to make the whole picture and the movement in the lines help to create the depth in the painting. My paintings did not do that. My paintings have lines but I used the lines in a very different way. I also connected my piece to the Abstract Expressionism movement. I feel that my paintings connect a little more with the movement then it did with the artist. In the process of making these three paintings learned many different things. The darker the background the thicker the paint has to be to cover it. I also learned that the thinner the paint is the easier it is to make lines. My research and from trial and air helped me to figure these things out. “All connected” looks a lot like my sketch but the difficult thing way that the proportions of my sketch did not match my painting so I had to improvise and add more than originally planned. I liked the way that i turned out and I feel it is one of my best paintings. If I had the opportunity to redo this project i think i would want to try to connect the three panels more by using similar color scheme.
Act Connections
- “All Connected” is similar to its inspiration in the way each panel had an abstract look to it as well as has similar techniques and style to the line painting.
- My inspiration led me to create a tryptic painting that was very controversial theme to it. “All Connected” shows that something so small can have a long lasting impact on our daily lives.
- While researching my artist inspiration I can to the conclusion that art can be perceived in many different ways. That you don’t always need a plan before you start to make are.
- The central idea around my inspiration research was finding a way that i could show how something as small as a phone or the internet can affect our future in both a positive and in a negative way.
- The inferences that were made when reading my research was, that my artist inspiration uses a lot of lines and just painted what he felt it looked like little to know planning, that Abstract Expressionism does have some thought behind it.
