Artist inspiration
My artist inspiration can from many things. My theme for this project was new adventures and new beginnings. I was inspired by van Gogh's starry night. I inspired by the landscape he used. And the movement that Van Gogh put in the sky. I wanted to have the same kind of movement in my block print. Van Gogh was a post impressionist painter that was know for the emotion and color that went into his work of art. Van Gogh used matching colors and short brush strokes in his paintings to create a sketch like painting. While in Pairs he changes the style that he painted from the short brush strokes to loosened brush strokes. This style became the post - impressionism. The post - impressionism style has more of a whimsical fee to it. The way Van Gogh chose his colors and the way the painting turned out all were dependent on his emotions as his art keeped him emotionally balanced. The movement of post - impressionist was to change the traditional role of the the paintings being a window into the artist's mind and soul to a window into the world. This new view influenced many people throughout the 20th century. The artist that thought that the impressionists allowed their obsessions with technique take over the importance. The people that did not like that were the ones who broke away and started the post - impressionists movement.

Reflection
I thought this project was going to be a simple project to create, but I was wrong. Finding and art inspiration and creating the sketches was the easy part but when it came to having to carve out the image that's where I realized it was not going to be easy. I was hard to figure out how much was needed to be carve away to get the best image. In spots that I carved, it was really deep in others it was not deep enough. I had to remember that what I carved away was going to be white and what stayed would be lack on the final piece. So when carving I have to be really careful and pay close attention to detail. Then into the printing that was the hardest part. Making sure that you had enough ink on the print to make a nice copy to have it evenly spread out and not clumpy and to make a good clean print was hard. My inspiration was the painting Starry Night by Van Gogh. I don’t feel that I reflected this well in my block print. I carved the “sky” part down to low so i did not get ink on enough of it to give it the effect that I wanted. Also my sky did not have the same movement like Van Gogh had in Starry Night. At first look at “Adventure is out there” views can’t automatically see my artist inspiration. They have to read the exhibition text to clearly understand that Starry Night by Van Gogh inspired my block print.
ACT Connection
- My inspiration was Starry Night by Van Gogh. He uses a lot of movement in his work which is the reason why he inspired my pieces as it’s about traveling and the adventures people run into.
- My inspiration led me to try to create a print with a background that was full of movement like Van Gogh’s Paintings are. It helped create a better connection to my theme of travel and adventure.
- I learned through my research that Van Gogh painted what he truly sees. Stars aren’t stationary, as the earth is always moving so the stars are always moving as well. That the colors of the paintings can change with the mode of the painter or with the shift of the sun light can shift the colors used.
- The central theme around my print is adventure. I used this theme because adventure can be found around every corner and Van Gogh and Post impressionist artists us a lot of landscapes, and adventure can be found anywhere at anytime.
- When researching the Post impressionist movement and Van Gogh I inferred that the colors that were painted were never permanent as the colors were always changing just like the time of day.
