Acrylic on canvas April, 2017 Exhibition Text “Nos lettres d'amour” was created to represent how that history does not just come in textbooks and through bad events. History is shown through love letter and through travails. It represents the fact that history is made every second and can be shown in all different ways shapes and sizes. “Nos lettres d'amour” is a print inspired by Federico Pietrella. |
Artist inspiration
“Nos lettres d'amour” was inspired by many different works of art. The main inspiration was Federico Pietrella. He is a Italian artist that uses acrylic paint and a rubber date stamp on canvas. Pietrella’s work from a distance look like black and white photos that have been pixelated but when you get closer you can see they are dates stamped. He is well known for his rubber stamp works. They also serve as a time line as every time he works on it the stamp has the current date. The stamps are places to make realistic sense. He uses the similar technique as stippling in his work but with the date stamp. The way the stamps are placed was inspired by old traveling trunks. In the past they would stamp not only you passport but your luggage as well and that inspired having the different words and the way they are positioned. I was also inspired by Van Gogh’s sunflowers. I thought it was fit to have the flower represent the different places on top of the words.

Planning
Process
I started by buys pre-stretched and gessoed canvas. I bought different sizes not knowing what i wanted for my final. I then played around with different colors to use. While I was figuring the color I wanted I was figuring out how much paint was needed and how watery it needed. I practiced stamping and blending colors on the stamp. I was not sure if i needed to paint the canvas before stamping so using a small canvas I tested it. I then used a larger canvas to create different arrangements that I could use for the words on the final product. When it came to the sunflowers I did not try a lot of different colors I wanted them to look as natural as I could. I placed them randomly to help give that old trunk stamp felling.
Experimentation
Evaluation
I had troubles using the stamps because the canvas is not a hard surface it moves. So I had to find ways to work around it. I tried many different ways. I felt that putting a thing book underneath the canvas helped to make it more of a solid surface. Not every stamp that I made came out perfectly. I just went with it, because I felt that I helped add character and made it look as if it was fading away. The final outcome did not come out as I planed. I thought that the only thing that was different between the different canvases would be the positioning of the flowers and the words and all the colors would be the same. I do like the fact the the coloring of the words are not the same it helps give each there own individual looks to make a larger piece. I feel that my project connects to the artist inspirations well because I created the same feelings and used similar material. From far away it’s hard to tell what's on the canvases but the closer the viewer gets the more detail they see and they then can see the text underlay. This is similar to the way that Pietrella made his work.
ACT Connection
- “Nos lettres d'amour” is similar to the inspiration throughout the the same materials. The travel box also inspired me to make the patterns that would be similar to ones that would be fround of the trunks.
- My inspiration led me to create a multi panel stamp painting. “Nos lettres d'amour” viewed from far away it’s hard to tell what the squiggly lines, similar to its inspiration. I lead me to have a better understanding on people's viewing perspective.
- When researching my inspiration I can to the revelation that even a painting can have history and have its own time line. Federico Pietrella creates a time lie because the stamps he uses had the proper date that he stamped it.
- The central idea around my inspiration research was finding a way to show that there is history in everything no matter the shape size or color.
- The inferences that were made when reading my research was, that Federico Pietrella was trying to make a statement how something so simple as the date stamps can make a bigger masterpiece.
