Room with a View
Our View
Wood and Cardboard
April, 2017 Exhibition text “Our view” was created to to represent the use of space and design through architecture at Lake Michigan. An adventure into a very small space that opens up to an endless view. It represents the fact that true beauty of things can't always be in plain sight, sometimes you have to go and find it. “ Our View” was inspired by Richard Serra’s architecture work. |
MeaningArchitecture is placed to create a feeling in people viewing it. The lake is a very large body of water that travels as far ass the eye can see. The meaning for “our view” is to take away a small portion of the view will the large walls. To create and adventure into a very small space that opens up to an endless view. To show that true beauty of things can't always be in plain sight, sometimes you have to go and find it.

Artist inspirationRichard Serra can be seen as part of the post abstract expressionist period. He combines the art of manipulation and modern abstract sculpture. He explores how his work would react to the setting he puts them in. he questions if it will have a positive or negative impact. He uses his work to create other environments within an environment. Richard Serra inspired “ Our View” because in his work he used large metal pieces to create sculptures. He then places theses sculptures out in the middle of busy areas. He like to create movement in his work but with in the viewers. He creates a negative space the surrounds the large pieces of metal. Serra plays with views emotion as they are walking through or around his work.

Planning
Process and Experimentation
After creating the planning models. I had to figure out how to make the wood bendable. I first cut the wood into the shapes that I wanted. Then I soaked the wood in water for about 30 min. From there I lightly dried the wood with a towel and take it to a form. The wood stayed on the form until completely dried. While the wood was drying I cut and measured the cardboard out to the right size and make the design of the sand. After the cardboard was cut to the way desired it was glued down. Once the wood has been dried and the glue dried I cut slits to hold up the walls. One the walls were measured and fit to the slits I glued them in.
Reflection
During this project I had many different ideas that related to my inspiration. I figured out that to create the feeling of openness and yet the feeling of claustrophobicness I should do to arc shaped walls that created a small space to walk through I did have challenges picking the design that I wanted to us. A lot of the projects has symmetry. After my midpoint Critiques I decided to do something that is not so symmetrical. My final product did not turn out as expected or as the planning model looked. I had a hard time figuring out how to get the wood to bend without snapping. I took some research. With metal u can heat it up to make it bend, with wood you need to sock it in water first. I then had to find a way to glue it and make it stay in place while the glue dried. A hard part in this project that I found was making all the cuts very clean and precise. I did like the outcome of the final product because it created the different spaces and portal that played with viewers feelings and created different portals. I do feel that my final product does strongly connect to my artist insertion.
MIAD Questions
How does your work create a relationship between land and water?
- My work creates a relationship with the land and water by giving people a seance of challenges to overcome to end up viewing a great of and open vast view of the water.
- I want people to get a felling of adventure when looking and my sculpture.
- My work does not only mess with your physically but mentally it. In my piece there are very tight spaces that open up to a wide open area, that you thing is the water front but its not you still have to go through another area.
- My sculpture has a strong usage of path and portal in it. The path ways change from very open to very tight. I have a childish fell to it as well. Something I need to add to my structure is the component of place.
- I would not say that the structure has meaning but it has similar features to the movement of water and waves.
- Having multiply path ways for multiply different adventures that they could go on.
- creating a structure that can be fun for all ages. Kids could enjoy running through it and play games in it while adults can enjoy just walking through it.
- A meaningful decision was the idea of how the wall would be placed in the sand.
ACT connection
- “Our view” was influenced by the inspiration through the architecture designs and shapes created.
- My inspiration, led me to create an abstract sculpture that manipulated people's feeling when they viewed it. It led me to want to play with the idea of space and portals.
- I learned through my research that using different angles and shapes could affect viewers feelings as they walk around the piece. I also learned culture surrounding that the sculpture is played can affect if it gets positive or negative feedback.
- The central theme around “Our View” is to create and adventure into a very small space that opens up to an endless view. To show that true beauty of things can't always be in plain sight, sometimes you have to go and find it.
- When researching Richard Serra I inferred that he wants people to react to his work and either may is stand out and be bold or blend in and be natural. That he intends to show the true beauty of architecture.
