Organic VS. Industrial
Flowers
Plastic Bags
March, 2017 Exhibition Text "Flowers" was created to represent how the hard world can affect the hearts that young children have. It represents the fact that everyone has a hard wall to hide them from the real world but behind that industrial wall is the true innocents and the purity of heart “flowers” is an organic vs industrial piece inspired by Claude Monet’s Chrysanthemums. |
MeaningEveryone had a hard wall to hide them from the real world but behind that industrial wall is the true innocents and the purity of heart that young children have. Children just like flowers open up themselves to the harsh world and chose to fight creating the industrial wall or being torn down by the weather of the world.

Artist InspirationClaude Monet is an artist in the impressionist movement. Was inspired by many works created by 2 people he studied; John Constable and Joseph Mallord William Turner. They both painted landscapes. Monet’s enjoyment of their work inspired him to paint different sceneries and different plants. The events going on in the world had some effect on the subject matter of Monet’s paintings. His paintings played with the effects of light. Monet painted with rapid brushstrokes and broken colors. As he age his painting we affected. The colors used were different because he could not tell what their exact color was. His vision had a created a reddish town which was reflected in his paintings. Once his vision was fixed he when back to painting he had done and re painted some of them with the color that he really wanted. Monet moved around a lot in his life and he painted a lot of flowers and things that he saw while moving around. A lot of painting come in a series because lighting would change and his paintings in that series would reflect the lighting changes. He mainly painted still lifes of flowers and nature. Planning
Process/ Experimentation
The first thing that I needed to do was to cut the bottom of the bag off and the handles. I had to then find it in half long ways 3 times to make it two inches hot gluing the ends together each time. On the side that was folded over I needed to cut it. So that it looked that I had many layers of plastic then In intervals I cut slits into the bag on the open side not cutting all the way through. After that I needed to roll the fringe that I made. After it was glued and rolled up fluff the fringe to make it look like the flower. I did this to seven small bags that were white and tan and one large white garbage bag.
Reflection
Flowers does not connect to the artist inspiration by the techniques I used but by the subject matter and the look of the piece. I mainly used just for the subject matter. The flowers were done well but could have been less sloppy. I did like that fact that none of the flowers looked the same. They were made in the same manner but had there own differences. I could have done better by making them thicker to help give them a more realistic look. I could have also used more hot glue so they would stay together better. If I could change this project I would change the amount of flowers I used and would have put them of stems to give a deeper resemblance of a flower arrangement. In my sketch I had a lot of flowers but in the product I did not have as any. I do think that the flowers in the basket might have looked better but I like that the flowers were made out of an industrial item and the bowl is also an organic items turned into an industrial item.
ACT Connections
- “Flowers” is similar to the artist inspiration through the subject matter of the two pieces, the differences are the inspiration a painting and flowers is more of a sculpture.
- My inspiration inspired me to create a organic vs industrial floral arrangement because Monet painted many painting flowers over the years.
- When researching I came to the realization that Monet uses different natural lighting effects to help enhance the main focus of the painting.
- The central theme around my inspiration it to find a artist that combines organic and industrial items.
- The inferences that were made when reading my research was, Monet used natural lighting and different perspectives while painting to create different feelings within the viewer.
