"Hidden lies"
30.48 cm by 60.96 cm
Mixed media December 2017 “Hidden lies” is a 1 ft by 2 ft mixed media that was inspired by the Nikki Johnson’s “Hills and Valleys”. Through color and meaning. “Hidden lie” was created to express how people lie and cheat and hid thing to make there appearance seem better to the public. This is reflected through the idea of mirror that reflect who people truly are |
Inspiration
|
“Hidden lie” was inspired by the Nikki Johnson’s “Hills and Valleys”. Jonson works in Fabrications, weaving, alterations, castings and photography. Hills and Valleys is one of her fabrications made out of Parenthood Wisconsin Clinics defunded under the Walker administration, aluminum, mirror, wood. This work inspired me to create a city landscape. I wanted to have the same look of the shape made out of circles.
MeaningWe all know that people lie and cheat and hid thing to make there appearance seem better to the public. This is reflected to the how people hide behind lies. The lies we create are there to save us from hurting ourselves or making us seem different. In return these lies we hide behind can harm us in the long wrong.

Planning
In plan two the city was similar to sketch one but I used hot glue to great the dots. I going to make the dots for the sky the same color that the sky was painted. For the city the dots are going to be silver and black to give the illusion that lights are on in the city.
|
In plan one I have very generic city landscape Painted black with the back ground a blue green color to match the color used in the inspiration. I then take a dotting tool and make large dots of paint to give the painting the same effect as the inspiration.
|
In plan three there is a generic city landscape in the background painted silver and on top of that there is three major landmarks. I was going to paint the sky the same color as the first three plans and then the landmarks are going to be black to make them look like they are silhouettes.

Process
|
I started with drawing out my planning sketches. Once I found the look that I wanted that would reflect my meaning and also connects to my inspiration. I then played around with different colors for the background. I liked how the hips in hills and Valleys had a dark green blue color. I tried to remake that color and use it as the sky color. Because I was making and silhouette of a city landscape I painted that black. I felt that theses colors To create the circles I wanted to use hot glue to give the look a 3D look. I took a wax paper and drew what I painted onto it. From there I mad globs of hot glue in the same shape as the city and sky. Each of the dots are different sizes. That Idea did not work because it was hard to control the size of the dotes and the shape. Instead I tool small rubber bumpers for the city and spray painted them silver. This would reflect the mirrors in the inspiration and it will also reflect the light found in the buildings. I chose not to use dots for the sky. I used some of the dotes I did create to see what it would look like and from a design point of view I did not think that it blended well. I look better with just the 3D don't in the city. I still wanted to make the dots in the sky so I used the end of a paint brush a a dotting tooll tp make small dotes out of paint.

Compare & Contrasts
My work different to the inspiration in many ways. "Hills and Valleys" is a mixed media piece made out of different materials. My art is made out of paint and hot glue. That "Hills and Valleys" is a woman's body with the capitol building in it. On the other hand 'Hidden lies" is a city landscape there is no visible connection to the government in my piece. It is similar through color. They have a connection through the idea of an image made out of another shape such as the circles.
Reflection
This project in general was a simple and fun project. I did something similar to this when I did my Beauty’s time Project instead of crayons I used to glue. This my original plan was not to spray paint the dots for the city silver I was going to leave them as black. I went back to my inspiration and saw that a stronger connection would be created if the dots were painted silver. In my inspiration the capitol building was made out of mirrors. I wanted to reflect this without using mirrors that why the glue dots were painted silver. There not a very strong connection to my artist if you just look at the piece. Before looking you have to know the artist inspiration before it clicks together. I wanted to reflect a similar meaning as my inspiration did on a broader scale. The inspiration talked about governments control over woman. I wanted to talk about out control over our image. I liked the final outcome of this project. In my opinion it reflects what I was trying to get at for my meaning. It also is connected to my local artist in my comparative study. If I could make improvement to this project I would have made the city smaller and created one large central focus similar to what the inspiration did with the capitol building.
ACT Connections
- The inspiration affected my work through color and texture used in my painting.
- My artist inspiration led me to think about the idea of lies and told how we hide behind lies to make ourselves looked good to others.
- When researching my inspiration I came to the conclusion that Nikki Johnson's work revolves around political issues or issues in the community that affects her in a large way.
- The central theme around my inspiration what to find a way to convey how we as people create lies and tales to hid behind to make us feel better about ourselves and to fit in easier.
- The inferences that were made when reading my research was that it's important to express your opinion and stand up for what you believe in and express that in different ways.
