Ephemera
"Distraction"
167.64cm by 170.18 Chalk on Cinder block December, 2016 Exhibition text: “Distraction” is an ephemera piece made out of sidewalk chalk on a cinder block wall that was inspired by the Gothic Architecture Movement and Tracy Stum. I was created to remind people that no matter how much stress you are carrying on your back you need to remember to keep moving, moving is the only way that you are going to get through the bad times. |

Process / Experimenting
My process started with researching what an ephemera art was. Then I sketched different ideas to pick. I wanted to play with irony by putting something so delicate on something so industrially sound. I had to first create a base color to put on the cinder blocks. I picked white to help the butterfly’s colors to pop. After the base was created I sketched out the butterfly out. Then started to trace it with the chalk. For the stain glass look on the wings I wanted the color to be separated like it would on a stain glass window. After “Distraction” was completed it was time to take pictures as it dissolve. I came to the conclusion that if I took two to three pictures at different angles each day. These pictures would create a portfolio of pictures that showed “Distraction” dissolving.

Reflection
My piece did not look an thing like I thought it would look like. I planed for it t I have many butterflies. It ending up being only one. I drew my first butterfly to big with not enough room for other butterflies. So instead of starting over I went with it. I had many setbacks and struggles when I can to my final product. The medium that I picked was chalk. In the rain storms I had to protect my work as the rain water would start to dissolve “Distraction” when it was not done. The medium that I used was chalk. It is a medium that I have never used before on a large scale before. So it created a change as I did not know how the medium would work for this piece. “Distraction” does represent it's artist inspiration, because it does not have a direct artist it is conceded to a movement. This might cause issue with views that might not know the moment to not be able to connect it to anything.
ACT Connection
- “Distraction” was inspired by the Gothic Architecture Movement and Tracy Stum. They inspired the medium, size, and design in the wings of my piece.
- My inspiration let me to create a large butterfly on a cinder block wall with wings that had the look of stain glass. I also helps me create a better connection between the theme and the final product.
- I learned through my research that Tracy Stum got her inspiration to do the kind of artwork that she makes from graffiti. I also learned that the Gothic Architecture Movement played with nature light and the many colors that it can have.
- The central theme around “Distraction” is to always keep moving no matter the weight your caring. The look of the wings connects to the way Gothic Architecture Movement played with the stain glass and natural light, and size of the pieces helps represent the amount of things people have to carry around with them.
- When researching the Gothic Architecture Movement and Tracy Stum I inferred that the use of nature light played big roles in creating the depth of color in the buildings from the stain glass. I also inferred that Tracy used chalk because it is an easier material when it comes to blending colors.
